Case Study

Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre, WA

The City of Armadale’s state-of-the-art Fitness and Aquatic Centre.

Background

The City of Armadale’s state-of-the-art Fitness and Aquatic Centre (AFAC) needed a modern locker solution that could integrate seamlessly with their facility management software, cater to both members and casual visitors, and reduce staff workload. Their existing lockers – MDF carcasses with laminate doors and battery-operated locks – were outdated and inefficient.

The Brief

AFAC’s priority was to have a locker system that worked in complete harmony with their facility management software. The system needed to be hardwired to ensure long-term reliability and minimal maintenance. Members required the convenience of using wearable bands to access lockers, while casual visitors needed the ability to easily hire lockers on a self-service basis.

Our Solution

Metra Australia supplied and installed a customised, fully networked electronic locker system tailored to AFAC’s unique requirements. For the aquatic areas, we installed two banks of ELS NET lockers, each fitted with Metra Touch 10” screens incorporating RFID readers, barcode scanners, and payWave functionality, allowing fast and convenient access for all users.

To serve the dry areas, we installed five banks of ELS DOT lockers. The foyer lockers were upgraded with built-in USB chargers, giving visitors a handy place to secure and charge devices while enjoying the facilities. Staff were also provided with a dedicated bank of ELS NET lockers, operated via the new Metra Touch 4” interface and external readers, enabling seamless use with staff access cards.

In collaboration with AFAC Operations Coordinator Fraser Read, we developed a unique hybrid locker design that combined half a Z-door with a small locker. This innovation allowed for a greater mix of storage sizes, making the system more versatile for different user needs.

Results

The installation transformed daily operations at AFAC. The new hardwired system has significantly reduced the amount of time staff spend managing lockers. Lifeguards, in particular, have been freed from constant locker-related interruptions, enabling them to focus fully on pool safety.

“The new installation is saving the lifeguards a massive amount of time, allowing them to lifeguard the pool without distraction.” — AFAC Operations Coordinator

Security has also improved dramatically. Since the installation of the new lockers, there has not been a single reported theft.

“Has not been one theft since the introduction of the new lockers.” — AFAC Operations Coordinator

Key Takeaway

By integrating cutting-edge locker technology with AFAC’s operational needs, Metra Australia delivered a reliable, secure, and user-friendly solution that improved staff efficiency, enhanced member satisfaction, and set a new standard for aquatic and fitness facility storage.
